The Irish in Film
An Annotated Database

 Title  Black '47
Occupying British forces used Ireland as a bread basket to feed the empire. When the potato famine struck it left the Irish without their main food source though their other crops were left intact. Unable to afford rising rents, tenant famers were turned out of their homes and disease spread through the hungry population. Depicted here is an unsympathetic look at a soldier who returns home to Ireland finding it ravaged by famine and death. Though millions of Irish died or fled, some fought the English landlords who shipped food from Irish shores though the people who grew it starved. Link to reviews Click picture
