 Title  The Brothers McMullen
This second-generation Irish-American family at first wallows in the 'drunken father/long-suffering mother' past. Yet, as fully realized Americans, they begin to question the old-world taboos and seek a better level of relationship than their parents had. So breaking the mold of their laconic, drunken father, they talk about love and relationships while they drink. This new freedom has its pitfalls. Without the authoritarianism of the local priest, this generation must find its own comfort level with American views on sexuality and responsibility, putting the burden of morality squarely on their own shoulders.
