There was a time when the grand majority of prizefighters in America were Irish, according to Hollywood, anyway. It is the old story of the disenfranchised group, exploiting any means to get ahead. Midge Kelly, a poor man of Irish descent, uses boxing as a means to get from "hey you" to "Mr." He has no use for the role of menial laborer in which the world seems to have cast him. So focused is he on becoming a "somebody," he doesn't realized that his opponent, Dunne, more than likely has the same story. |
