Title The Fighting 69th |
The Fighting 69th is a New York City infantry regiment the hails back to the civil war when Irish immigrants were recruited right off the boat. When WWI broke out many Irish-Americans joined up to fight in Europe. James Cagney plays a tough guy whose street smarts don't fit into military life or the dangers of the battlefield. The chaplain, played by perennial priest, Pat O'Brien, does his best to steer him straight, but his lone-wolf attitude and cowardice threatens them all. This is a story of Irish solidarity and how we must stick together to survive. Though this story may be fiction the battle of the Argonne Forest was very real. Tens of thousands were killed or wounded.
