Title The Friends of Eddie Coyle |
Set in Boston, we see familiar locations in downtown, Cambridge, and Quincy. Coyle and his 'friends' are a group of Irish-American thugs who believe themselves ordinary guys just trying to make a living and stay off welfare. Coyle is a petty criminal making a last ditch effort to roll on a conviction. He has five days to report to prison. He tries to make a deal with the cops: ratting out a friend to buy favors. But what results is an uneasy dance between the cops and the criminals. (This theme blossoms in Higgins' book At End of Day loosely based on the exploits of 'Whitey' Bulger the infamous Boston gangster and FBI informant.) This film predates 25th Hour about an Irish-American convicted drug dealer with 24 hours to report to prison. |
