Title The Magdalene Sisters |
For anyone who has secretly hated or feared nuns, this is your movie. Based on the true stories of four young women, we are taken inside a Magdalene laundry where the sisters purposely work their charges 'beyond endurance,' believing that the sins of this world can be redeemed through hard labor. What we learn is that the so-called sins could be as little as being flirtatious. Meanwhile, the outside world fully believes the women imprisoned in the laundry are prostitutes truly deserving of their fate. What is worse is that allowing subjugation by such total authority inevitably leads to abuse, even, ironically, to sexual abuse. It is frightening to learn that the Magdalene Laundries were not abolished until 1996. |
