The Irish in Film
A Complete List of Irish Films

 Title  Ondine
This strange tale, set in the small west coast village of Castletownbere, centers around the myth of the Selkies. According to Irish legend, Selkies are seals that come ashore and live as humans. When a lone Irish fisherman pulls a woman abroad in his net he is not sure how she got there and how she survived. She calls herself Ondine. His daughter, who knows about these things from fairy stories, decides she must be a Selkie. Yet this is far from a fairy story. This film deals with the hard living in Western Ireland. The scant fishing threatens poverty and the lonely life threatens alcoholism. Ondine brings with her the miracles, small and large, that make life worth living.
