Title State of Grace |
The death cry of the Irish Mob in Hell's Kitchen, this film shows New York's Irish quarter in its last days. Gary Oldman (who claims some Irish blood) plays a member of the gang determined to hold on to their way of life. He distains his sister for moving up town to the wrong side of the tracks. (Or should I say bridge.) The character's tearful plea for justice in a world that has replaced his home turf with yuppie condos shows just how real the loss is. This sentiment may be too difficult to understand for many, but is not lost on the twice-displaced Irish of the Bowery. |
