Based on the book of the same title by Lillian Beckwith, this film is about people who live on the islands that dot the coast of Ireland. The author lived on various isles off the coast of England and Ireland and wrote several books about island life. The closeness of the people to the land, the sea and each other all shine through in this little gem of a film. The tiny islands are magical and it is easy to see why ancient myths abound. Standing stones and seals are important 'characters' if you will. The standing stones represent more than the past. To the children of the island, the stones are living beings trapped in stone. They can grant wishes. And the seals are messengers between those of this world and the people who have passed on. See also: The Secret of Roan Inish for another film about these islands.
