This delightful animated film tells the story of a family living in a lighthouse on the coast of Ireland (spoiler alert: and the mom is a Sulkie). On the surface it is a story about fitting in. But, underneath, in the depths, it is a cautionary tale about the importance of human emotions and the power of music, song and stories on our emotions. Without our emotions we turn to stone. The story combines several Irish folktales incorporating the legends of Sulkies, giants and the Shanakee. The sensitivity with which the film deals with loss, longing and grief is amazing and oh so truly Irish. Made by the same filmmakers as Secret of Kells who use seemingly simple animation techniques which give their films an unusual feeling of depth.
