The Irish see themselves as the underdogs. And the poor Irish see themselves as the underdogs of the underdogs. In this film the characters actually say it, identifying themselves with poor Black America. Thus, instead of singing the old traditional laments, they decide to sing the Black laments, claiming that as the downtrodden they have the right to sing the Blues.
