Interview with George DeVein

Q: Where did the idea for Renfield’s Journal come from? How does a programmer come to write a Victorian Novel?

A: I was a member of the G&S Players at MIT. One year they decided to put on a “straight play” during the summer season --with the proviso that it was from the same era. That is: Victorian. So, Dracula was my first non-singing role.

Q: Singer?

A: Yes, I’m a singer.

I wanted to play Mina, but I got cast as Renfield. The director was into the Trans thing before it hit mainstream. She asked each cast member to write a brief history of their character. I grabbed a copy of Dracula for reference.

Dracula is not a narrative. It’s the character’s diaries and letters but not the madman, Renfield’s for some reason. Where are his entries?
